Archive - Discography

Archive were formed by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths in 1994 from the ashes of the UK breakbeat act Genaside II. Together with the female singer Roya Arab and the young rapper Rosko John, the band released their first album “Londinium” on Island Records in 1996, a mix of dark Trip hop (in a similar vein to Massive Attack), electronica and progressive music. The album received moderate critical acclaim, but due to internal dispute the band split up later that year.

However, in 1997 Keeler and Griffiths reformed Archive with another female singer (Suzanne Wooder) and in 1999 released their second album “Take My Head”, a mix of pop and symphonic trip-hop far more melodic than its predecessor. The band have described this album as their least favourite of their albums.

Between 2002 and 2005 the band released three albums with singer Craig Walker (formerly of Power of Dreams) to growing popularity and critical acclaim, including a large following in France and Poland. These albums have seen Archive gradually turn away from their roots in Electronica and Trip hop and towards more psychedelic and progressive style of bands such as Pink Floyd, Mogwai, and The Secret Machines. The band also composed the soundtrack to the French film Michel Vaillant, released in November 2003.

Archive announced at short notice that Walker would not join the band’s tour in November 2004 “due to unforeseen circumstances”. Another statement from Darius Keeler hinted at personal problems keeping Walker from touring. In an interview with the TV station arte in late 2005, Keeler and Griffiths stated that Walker is in fact no longer with Archive and is working on a solo album, whereas Walker has stated that he left Archive due to personal differences with management and other band members.

In autumn of 2004, Archive announced that Dave Pen (Birdpen) would replace Walker on the Noise tour – due to the continuing personal problems between Walker and the rest of the band. During this same tour, Keeler and Griffiths met the singer Pollard Berrier at one of their shows in Vienna, Austria. The three began writing and rehearsing together, and were recording in Southside Studios, London, by September 2005.

In May 2006, Archive released “Lights”, from which the first single was “System”. Dave Pen contributed on three tracks of the album and Maria Q sang on four tracks.

They have been touring in Europe since 2006, with Dave Pen, Pollard Berrier and occasionally Maria Q as singers. As the critical reaction to their “Lights” tour has been excellent, they recorded a live DVD in Paris in January 2007.

Archive released their 6th album “Controlling Crowds” on March 30th 2009. The first single was entitled “Bullets”.

As of February 2009, Rosko John is “back in the Archive collective”, according to the official Archive newsletter.

Album Review

Like fellow Frenchmen Air and Daft Punk, M83’s Anthony Gonzalez has the knack for making sounds others might think of as outdated, or even tacky, into music that feels stylish and fresh. Saturdays=Youth lives up to its evocative title, but the youth it captures is filtered through nostalgia for the unrepentantly fake sounds of the ’80s, transforming them into delicate fantasy pop. Synths whoosh like wind tunnels and ping like lasers, guitars are whipped into ethereal froth, the drums are robotic and proud of it, and the production reproduces the cleaner-than-clean, almost brittle style of the era almost too perfectly. The largely instrumental “Couleurs” races through the night on synth and drum swells that haven’t been heard since Miami Vice’s heyday, while “Skin of the Night” sounds like it borrows Phil Collins’ kit from No Jacket Required.

Though Saturdays=Youth often plays like a love letter to artists ranging from the Cocteau Twins to Mr. Mister, it never seems like an exercise designed to just re-create those sounds. The cinematic feel of Before the Dawn Heals Us is stronger than ever here, from the 11-minute finale “Midnight Souls Still Remain,” which unfolds like closing credits, to the Breakfast Club-meets-fashion shoot album cover, which makes Saturdays=Youth appear to be the soundtrack to the most glamorous film John Hughes never made. This hyper-stylized teen romance and angst drive the album, taking it to the highest highs and the lowest lows. “We Own the Sky” is jubilant, stretching out into a summery haze of airy vocals and synths; “Too Late” contemplates the end in melodramatic, ultra-romantic fashion, ending with a whispered “you, always.”

Saturdays=Youth also features some of M83’s purest pop yet, which provide many of the album’s standouts. “Kim & Jessie” heart-racing young love is one of Gonzalez’ finest sonic confections, along with “Graveyard Girl” and the Kate Bush-worshipping “Up!,” a sci-fi fairytale that boasts some fittingly unearthly singing by guest vocalist Morgan Kibby. As super-stylized as its sounds and emotions are, Saturdays=Youth always seems genuine, even when it feels like its songs are made from the memories of other songs. For all of its nostalgic haze, it’s some of M83’s most focused music. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

My Review
Pearl Jam’s third birth comes with mixed emotion: whilst obviously being a musical success it also contains some of Eddie Vedder’s sad musings on Kurt Cobain’s death, most prominently in the haunting “Immortality”. Inside the cover art, a beautiful poem is included:

I waited all day.

you waited all day..

but you left before sunset..

and I just wanted to tell you

the moment was beautiful.

Just wanted to dance to bad music

drive bad cars..

watch bad TV..

should have stayed for the sunset…

if not for me.

External Reviews
It’s a sad paradox of these times that the artists who most successfully express our fears and anxieties are the ones who are least able to cope with the burdens of fame. Whether it’s Sinéad O’Connor, who masochistically invites humiliation with public displays of emotional nakedness, or Kurt Cobain, who finally just gave up, it’s sometimes tempting to say what Frank Sinatra once told George Michael – that is, “Stop complaining and enjoy the ride.” But then, Frank is not exactly the most sensitive guy himself.

No one regrets that he’s too famous now to be Ian MacKaye of Fugazi more than Eddie Vedder does. As it was for Cobain, it’s difficult for Vedder to adjust to the fact that the people who used to beat him up in school are now among his biggest fans. While Vitalogy is not the calculatedly anti-commercial album that In Utero was rumored to be (but really wasn’t) before it was released, the one designed to alienate all the fans Vedder doesn’t like, it is a wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful.

“As privileged as a ~censored~” is how Vedder sums up his fame in “Immortality.” “Victims in demand for public show.” In “Corduroy,” success has left him disaffected and no longer in control of his destiny: “I’m already cut off like I feared/I’ll end up alone like I began,” he sings before concluding: “All the things that others want for me/Can’t buy what I want because it’s free.” Ironically nostalgic for the desperately troubled youth that inspired his best and most tormented songs, he sings on “Not for You”: “All that’s sacred comes from youth/Naive and true with no power/Nothing to do/I still remember/Why don’t you?” Like Pete Townshend, whose Quadrophenia was the soundtrack of Vedder’s adolescence, Vedder seems afraid that while once he was the Punk, he’s now the Godfather.

Vedder is also more haunted by intimations of mortality than ever before – not exactly a new theme for him but a chilling one for a record whose title means “the study of life.” The album opens with a death-obsessed song called “Last Exit,” and its final track, “Stupid-mop,” concludes with a meditation on suicide. On “Immortality,” Vedder acknowledges, “Cannot stay long/Some die just too young.”

Vitalogy has a number of gripping songs that match the soaring anthems of Ten, the extended grooves of Vs. or the poetry of either record. The first three tracks are a promising start: “Last Exit,” “Not for You” and especially “Spin the Black Circle,” a revvedup thrash tribute to vinyl, rock harder than anything Pearl Jam have ever done. “Whipping” and “Corduroy” are also hard edged and catchy. “Better Man” is a haunting ballad about a woman trapped in a bad relationship; it recalls the character study “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” on Vs. As on “Daughter,” also from Vs., Vedder’s empathy for and identification with women throughout Vitalogy is remarkably affecting and unforced.

Interspersed among the stronger tracks, though, are throwaways and strange experiments that don’t always work. The demented polka “Bugs,” which features Vedder, backed by a discordant accordion, ranting paranoiacally about insects, makes an uncharacteristic stab at humor but ends up being more silly than funny. “Pry, To” is a one-minute doodle that consists of Vedder spelling out the word privacy over and over until we get the point already.

But the most bizarre cut on the record is the last one, “Stupidmop,” a seven-minute hommage to the Beatles’ “Revolution 9.” Consisting of tape loops of distressed voices over banshee guitar howls, the song begs the question, “Is anyone still listening out there?” It opens with a young girl repeating “My spanking, that’s the only thing I want so much.” “Why is that better than a hug?” a woman asks her. “Because you get closer to the person,” the girl replies. The cut closes with a dialogue that is even more disturbing than it might ordinarily be in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s death. A man asks a woman, “Do you ever think that you actually would kill yourself?” “Well, if I thought about it real deep, I believe I would,” she answers. They’re the last words on the album.

Bart Simpson once daydreamed that he was a rock star with a phony British accent, singing, “Me Fans Are Stupid Pigs.” Some may think Vedder has reached the point where he thinks his efforts are just Pearl Jam before swine; they’ll dismiss this record as swerving dangerously close to being contemptuous of his audience. But Vitalogy isn’t Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music, nor does it seem like a tossed-off interlude like Zooropa. It’s more a portrait of an artist in crisis, a man who hasn’t yet decided what direction to take next.

My Favorite Track(s):
Immortality

World Of Warcraft: Mosaic Soundtrack (2009)

World Of Warcraft: Mosaic Soundtrack (2009)

The latest CD collection of Blizzard Entertainment music spans the original game and its two expansions, and includes unreleased music from Black Temple, Ulduar, and Sunwell Plateau.

Azerothian history is rife with conflict. The undead Scourge grows in number while the Lich King plots to mold new heroes into willing servants. The blue Dragon Aspect, Malygos the Spell-Weaver, is realigning ley lines worldwide, heedless of the destruction he may cause. Azeroth is the only world in all of existence to have resisted the demonic Burning Legion, an astonishing feat it has not achieved three times. Nevertheless, such victories do not come without a cost. Memories of recent losses are still raw, and tensions between the Horde and Alliance continue to escalate. Featuring a large variety of moods and tempos, this soundtrack allows you to revisit past battles, toast the valiant fallen, spin grand tales of treachery or heroism in front of the tavern fire… and celebrate the world of Azeroth while it yet endures.
